Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust is to play a major part in a pioneering new centre which will help people living with dementia.

CPFT is to relocate its Memory Clinic to the new Dementia Resource Centre in Lincoln Road, Peterborough, when it opens in the spring.

The centre, which will also house representatives of the Alzheimer’s Society and Peterborough City Council, will be a ‘one-stop shop’ for advice, information and support.

The CPFT Memory Clinic, which has 10 staff, is currently based at the Gloucester Centre, in Orton Longueville. Last year, more than 500 people were referred to the service by their GPs.

Staff at the Memory Clinic, who include doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and nurses, assess all those who have been referred by their GP because of concerns over significant changes in their memories.

If patients are diagnosed with conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s they are given medical and practical help. Support and advice is also offered to their relatives or carers.

Janet Perks, service manager for older people’s community services at CPFT (pictured), said: “As a Trust we are delighted to be part of the new Dementia Resource Centre.

“To have our Memory Clinic staff working under the same roof as other health partners will mean even better services and support for the people we work with.

“Over the last six months, our staff have worked incredibly hard to reduce waiting times to six weeks. We hope the move to the new centre will further improve the service and be of significant benefit to patients and their families.”

The G8 recently held a summit on dementia with the Government announcing it is to double the funding for dementia research to £122 million by 2025.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are more than 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and that figure will rise to more than one million people by 2021.
