Staff and patients mark anniversary with a party

Staff and patients at a unit at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust have held a celebration to mark 20 years since it opened.

Scores of guests attended the party at George Mackenzie House at CPFT’s Fulbourn Hospital site in Cambridge.

They were treated to a buffet lunch, music from staff and patients, and a special cake made by a member of staff.

Consultant Dr Neil Hunt, who has worked at George Mackenzie House since it opened, said: “It seems amazing that 20 years has already gone by.

“The best thing I heard was a patient who once said,’I didn’t want to come here, but I’m so glad that I did’. For me, that sums it all up.”

Ward manager Anne-Marie Paul said: “We wanted to have a party to mark our 20 years, and celebrate with friends old and new, and thank them for their support.”

The building, which opened in 1995, is a low-secure unit with facilities to care for up to 20 male and female patients.

* The story behind the name of the unit is a rather curious one. In 1995, it was decided to call the building after Dr George Mackenzie Bacon, a respected medical superintendent who ran what is now the Fulbourn Hospital site in the 19th century.

However, officials at the time – before CPFT took over the running of services in 2002 – were concerned that the name George Bacon House may be unfortunately shortened to GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm).

Instead, they decided to use Mr Bacon’s middle name, and called the building George Mackenzie House.
