Staff nominated for prestigious health awards

Sally and dementia carers team lead the way as services for older people are shortlisted

Staff nominated for prestigious health awards
26 June 2019

Staff and teams at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust have been shortlisted in two prestigious health awards.

The Dementia Carers’ Support Service is a finalist in the Commitment To Carers category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2019, the profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence.

Meanwhile there is double delight for CPFT in the National Older Peoples Mental Health and Dementia Awards 2019 run by Positive Practice in Mental Health.

The Trust’s Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team for Older People has been shortlisted in an award recognising work to support people in the community with mental health issues, while CPFT’s Older People and Adult Community directorate has been nominated for an honour highlighting how physical and mental health teams work together to treat patients.

The RCNi Awards take place in London on 3 July, while the Positive Practice awards will be held in Bristol on 11 July.

Nurses Sally Kitchin (pictured) and Fe Franklin set up the DCSS, a unique peer support service for the carers of people with dementia, after realising that carers of a relative with the condition were struggling to access services and support.

The award from the RCNi – part of the Royal College of Nursing - recognises nurses who have developed initiatives that improve carers’ physical and mental health, as well as having positive outcomes for the person being cared for.

Sally and Fe recruit former carers who have gone through the same experience and wish to “give something back”, creating a team of volunteer befrienders who offer one-to-one support and coaching for current carers, giving them the confidence to seek help and articulate what they need.

The volunteers hold monthly peer group supervision sessions for ongoing support and self-development, helping coordinator Ms Kitchin to pick up on mental and physical health needs.

Sally said: “It was an absolute shock to be shortlisted for these prestigious awards and to be nominated for this award by one of our volunteers.

“People caring for relatives with dementia say it is a lifeline and that they feel normal when meeting peers with similar experiences and challenges.”

RCNi managing director Rachel Armitage said: “Nurses in all areas are increasingly under pressure but they still deliver exceptional innovation and outstanding, compassionate patient care day in, day out.

“The RCNi Nurse Awards are a chance to recognise the achievements of nurses like Sally and her team and showcase nursing excellence.

“Our judging panel has faced an almost impossible task in selecting a shortlist from hundreds of high-quality entries this year. We look forward to celebrating the strength and diversity of our profession at the awards in July.”

Dr Ben Underwood, clinical director of CPFT Older People and Adult Community directorate, said: “I am delighted that yet more of our teams have been shortlisted for prestigious national awards.

“It is good for staff to have their dedication reflected in this way, and more importantly goes to prove the amazing care that patients have experienced from the innovative changes in services that we have put in place in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – and that is even more satisfying that the awards themselves.”

CPFT provides physical health care for older people and those with long-term conditions as well as mental health care across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
